Everything You Need to Know About Different Types of Self-Care

When we hear the word ‘self-care,’ we automatically assume that it’s all about focusing on our skin, body, and mind. But it’s not limited to that – and understanding the different types of self-care is crucial in addressing your needs holistically.

Self-care has tons of layers that most of us have no knowledge about. Here’s what you should know about it:

Physical

First and foremost, you need to start with something you understand. Self-care can be intimidating but it can also be simple if you know the basics.

Most often, we tend to neglect the importance of everyday tasks like taking a bath, brushing your teeth, and changing your clothes. But these basic habits are as essential as working out, drinking lots of water, and eating healthy.

The point is, anything you do to ensure a strong, clean, and healthy body matters. This is the first step because how can you boost your wellbeing without a strong foundation?

Emotional

Taking care of our mental health is as vital as tending to our physical needs. Some people find their jobs unfulfilling but they still do what they have to do in order to put food on the table and pay the bills.

However, in sacrificing emotional wellbeing, they will later notice how it starts wreaking havoc on their bodies through physical symptoms. As such, caring for one’s mental health is non-negotiable – that is, they have to be connected and contented with what they’re doing.

Finding little tasks like journaling, disconnecting from the news, and volunteering are just some of the most fun ways of de-stressing, and keeping yourself busy and happy in this terrifying time.

Social

Humans are inherently social beings, meaning we can’t thrive without interactions. However, there will come a time when socializing can get so draining, which is why you need to practice self-care whenever this feeling creeps in.

Don’t forget to put limits and boundaries and to pull yourself out if things get overwhelming. Establish firm communication tactics so that you may explain clearly why you need to skip another Zoom call or a group hangout.

But that doesn’t mean you should shut all people out, especially when you need them. Don’t forget to find the balance and reach out when you’re finding it hard to navigate the current situation.

Financial

This is one of the most forgotten aspects that we should pay attention to. Ironically, money matters affect us on a deeper level – it causes depression, anxiety, and stress that may lead to diseases.

If you are stressed out about how you’ve been spending, you can use a budget tracking app or list down your savings versus expenses. It is worth noting that self-care isn’t going to address unemployment or debt but it can help you understand how to better approach these problems.
