Too much build up of stress can really mess up a person’s life, and a good night’s sleep can do wonders to bring those stress levels under control. If you’re having difficulty sleeping at night, you could be doing permanent damage to your brain as 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night are necessary for the average adult. Not getting enough rest can be highly detrimental to your health and well-being, and here’s how you can make sure that you get your proper rest:

Expose Yourself To More Light During Daytime

While we rely on clocks to decide our daily sleep routines, our bodies have their built-in clocks as well, which rely on the amount of light our eyes are being exposed to. This ‘clock’ is known as circadian rhythm, and you can easily take advantage of it in order to develop a healthy sleep routine.  Even people with insomnia have reported having had better sleep when they started exposing themselves to more light during the day and reported that it reduced the time they needed to fall asleep by an average of 83%. In a study, it was revealed that only two hours of sunlight a day could increase the duration of sleep by 2 hours and even improved its quality by a huge margin!

Stop Using Artificial Light In The Evening

As beneficial as it is to have more light exposure when the sun is up, your body needs the lack of light in the evening to keep your body’s clock running. Smartphones and other gadgets emit huge amounts of blue light which can affect your cycle negatively. A lot of modern phones offer the option to cancel out blue light which is definitely ideal. The optimal strategy is to put away all your devices after sundown so that the light you experience is kept to a bare minimum. Watching television right as you’re going to sleep is not going to do you any favors, so make sure that you turn it off.

Lay Off The Caffeine

Coffee and other caffeinated drinks have various benefits. Such drinks are consumed by most of the US population and there’s no reason to stop consuming them altogether. However, the problem arises when people start drinking coffee when it’s getting close to their bedtime. A cup of coffee for an energy boost while working on an assignment in the evening can mess up the sleep quality of a person and is not a good idea whatsoever.  If you need to consume coffee for any tasks that you require, make sure that you drink it only in the morning, or at least six hours before it’s time for you to sleep.
