The Active Ingredients That Work Against Aging (And Which Ones To Avoid)!
While every aging man or woman wishes for a miracle-in-a-jar to cure their wrinkles, sagging skin, discoloration, and the assortment of issues that come with the natural process of aging, the sad truth is that there isn’t one. The good news is that there are some active ingredients that have been developed over time which are effective in the battle against aging. Even if these ingredients only help to turn back the hands of time for just a fraction, we bet plenty will be satisfied!
There are countless products in the cosmetics aisle that promise to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, lighten pigmentation and discoloration, or even tighten pores and give you a little face-lift of sorts. But fare and few actually deliver on these many promises. Here are the ingredients and treatments that really do work!
This surely wouldn’t have been your first time to hear of this miracle treatment! Retinol is a form of vitamin A and is considered a platinum standard in the world of topical treatments for aging. Prescription-strength vitamin A is also available, and this ingredient is showing up in more and more anti-aging cosmetics. The vitamin works by increasing the cell turnover in the uppermost layers of the skin which leads to a reduction in wrinkles and in an improvement of the skin tone in general.
Peptides are chains of amino acids that act as instructional molecules within the cells of your skin, signaling them on when to heal, to renew, and to slough away. A commonly known peptide is Argireline, which also goes by the name Matrixyl. It works effectively to soften crow’s feet. The compound achieves this by slow contraction of the very small muscles surrounding the eye area.
No fight against aging would be complete without a couple of tough antioxidants! It is common knowledge that antioxidants are soldiers that fight against cell damage from free radicals. If you didn’t know, free radicals are produced when your skin is exposed to harmful UV rays of sunlight, as well as exposure to some chemicals. The result is skin that is more radiant and firmer. Antioxidants can be consumed either in food, drink, or even applied topically. A diet rich in antioxidants will make all the difference in your battle against aging!
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
These are yet another group of compounds that you are sure to have come by in your search for the best anti-aging products. AHAs include lactic, citric, glycolic, and mandelic acids, and they work by peeling away the very topmost layer of the skin in order to reveal new, youthful-looking skin with fewer fine lines. The compounds are available in prescription-strength as well as in over the counter products.
This is a hormone that naturally forms part of the human body and is known to decrease with age. Estrogen can be consumed in prescription strength as well in a product called estriol. The hormone assists with maintaining skin firmness and is known to decrease the appearance of pores by actually decreasing their depth and size.
Now that you have an idea of the ingredients that are the best-known fighters in the war against aging, it is also a good idea to have a little knowledge of what you should be avoiding. If you see petroleum-based products in the ingredients list on the cosmetic product you wish to use, think twice. Petroleum-based products are very common in beauty creams in spite of the fact that they actually plug up your pores and prevent your skin from detoxifying and simply breathing. The temporary softness it provides can make it an attractive product, but this is a mistake. Another ingredient to be wary of are sulfates – both Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) as well as Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These two are specifically good at drying out your hair and skin – and not in a good way!
After all of this talk about beauty products, it may not be the place to mention that a healthy diet and regular exercise is the real key to anti-aging, but how could we let you go without emphasizing it! After all, it is the truth and none of these ingredients will help you more than if you invest in your exercise routine and in your plate of food. Let your moisturizer take care of what creeps past your great diet and fitness routine, and don’t forget plenty of sunscreen and water as well!
