Four Ingredients You Need to Watch Out For in Anti-Aging Products

young looking beautiful face skinMost, if not all, of us, don’t want to age, or maybe, we just don’t like what aging does to our body or our face. It’s safe to assume that people’s fear of aging, or fear of the signs of aging, goes back to vanity. Why vanity? Think of it — would you mind getting old if you would just maintain that youthful look or glow just like the vampires and elves in fictional stories?

Most of us would answer, “no, we most definitely won’t mind”. But we don’t age as elves do in Lord of the Rings or the vampires in Twilight; we don’t get to maintain wrinkle-free eyes nor smooth skin. When we get old, it shows in our hair and our skin — that is why people don’t like aging and why some people go crazy over anti-aging products being sold in the market.

Anti-aging or age-defying products promise a lot of things – from fighting those harmful free-radicals to stimulating collagen production of the skin to make it look tighter, thereby achieving a youthful glow. And so many people buy these promises. This is the reason why, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, people or anti-aging product consumers, in particular, spend a considerable amount of money each year for anti-aging cleansers, creams, and lotions.

There is an undeniable frenzy over anti-aging products these past few years, and we are not saying that using age-defying products is wrong. After all, who are we to tell you what to do with your life? There might even be some creams and lotions that would correctly work for you, but don’t just buy and apply. You are a consumer, and you have a right to know things about the products that you are about to buy.

If you are going to buy an anti-aging cream, lotion or cleanser, make sure that they don’t contain any of these following ingredients.

HGH or Human Growth Hormone

Some age-defying products contain this ingredient, but the human growth hormone does not slow down the aging process. Instead, it just hides all of the symptoms. There were animal studies which showed that those with higher HGH have a shorter life span. It could also cause diabetes. This, however, has not been adequately tested to know if it is safe to use.

Propylene Glycol

This ingredient is a neurotoxin. In other words, it can cause toxic effects on our nervous system. It is also a strong irritant and has the potential of causing liver and kidney damage. Propylene Glycol might even cause contact dermatitis, acne, and in some cases, a delayed allergic reaction. Now, you might wonder why something this toxic substance is an ingredient in beautifying creams. This is because Propylene Glycol is absorbed into the body quickly and also enhances the penetration of other substances. It helps increase the absorption of the other ingredients in the product to ensure they penetrate the skin to the bloodstream quickly.

Ethylparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben, and propylparaben

These substances may disrupt the way your endocrine system works, and as a result, it can cause a disturbance in the balance of the hormones in your body. These substances enter your body through the skin, and they might even cause irritation. These parabens were also found in the tumors that grow in breast cancer, but further testing is necessary to know if it really plays a part in causing those tumors.

Imidazolidinyl urea and Diazolidinyl urea

The Imidazolidinyl urea is a strong irritant. It can cause contact dermatitis if you are not careful, and it is also a formaldehyde releaser. The Diazolidinyl urea is also a strong irritant and can cause dermatitis, and just like the other one, it is also a formaldehyde releaser. Why should you run away when you hear or see that something is a formaldehyde releaser? This is because it is known to cause cancer.

While buying anti-aging or beauty products, you shouldn’t just grab every product because it’s popular or the cheapest. It is important to take a close look at the ingredients used in the product. This will help you identify and avoid products that might be slowly killing you in the quest for beauty.
