Fortunately, there is a way around this terrible situation and the secret lies in shifting gears! Give those racing thoughts the boot by refocusing your concentration elsewhere. A good place to start is by losing yourself in a relaxing book! Here are the best books to help induce relaxation before bed:

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

This is a little book with plenty to say! The novella is an imaginative piece that is a perfect read for bedtime because it is as relaxed and warm as a cup of tea! The illustrations are dream-like and calming as well. It was actually first printed in 1943, and it happens to be one of the author’s most famous works. In France, it ranks number one in the list of the best books of the 20th century – and that speaks volumes!

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

This is a book for every rom-com lovers out there. If you happen to be at your most relaxed when you’re reading a cute romance novel, then this will take you to where you need to be! The basic premise is that a pair of best friends exchange emails at work, and a guy named Lincoln, who works as the internet security officer, reads these emails and happens to fall in love with one of the girls. Of course, you can predict what may happen but that’s the point!

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

This novel is unique in that it is written from the perspective of Enzo who is a dog. Enzo believes in the Mongolian legend which states that a dog who prepares well will actually be reincarnated as a human in its next life. So, the book is about Enzo’s journey and what he learns from his owner and family. Overall, the book is moving and touching. It is also about a dog’s loyalty and the unfailing support he provides his owner, Denny. A film was produced in 2019 based on this book so maybe you can find time to watch it after you’ve read the book — or the other way around!

This is a book that isn’t heavy on the plot which is a good idea if you are exhausted by any action-packed scenes or intertwining characters and plots in a novel — these can easily get your mind riled up before bed. This is a relaxing read particularly because of its thoughtful musings and the fact that it is reminiscent of the famous Virginia Woolf. It is a chronicle around life in solitude.

Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney

A truly engaging book, though in a most relaxed manner, this is based on a character who is 85 years old and decides to take a walk on the last day of 1984 and reminisce. The story speaks of a woman who has lived through the changing times in America and her first-hand experience of it all.
