American citizens often have their roots in other countries. Hence, it is not surprising that they often get guests from other nations who are family members planning to stay for a few months. When they do, they, of course, need their own health insurance within the duration of their stay. There are plenty of companies offering various packages for Visitor’s Insurance. If you are planning to buy one soon, it can get really confusing as to which one would be a great fit for you. Does The Plan Cover 100%?

The answer to this question is likely to be “no”.  The visitor’s insurance is not similar to the usual health insurance coverage. Usually, for a normal doctor’s visit, we need to shell out money for the co-pay which is a small amount. But in a visitor’s insurance, there is no guarantee that you won’t have to pay a bigger amount. However, the insurance ensures that if there is a major expense, the insurance might help. Before you buy the insurance, ask the insurance company about what kind of customer support they have. It’s more of an assurance that you can immediately get in touch with them in case of an emergency. Also, ask them about the working hours of customer support or their regular business hours in case you have to visit their office for administrative queries. This is especially important if you are buying your insurance through an agent or an agency. Also, ask them about their assistance beyond the coverage period. Sometimes if there is a dispute over some unpaid bills, talking to the insurance company might help.

Insurance Card

Having an insurance card is very important since that is the first thing that will be required when you go to a medical provider. Just like your normal health insurance, the visitor’s insurance will also provide an insurance card. This can be especially problematic if the insurance has been bought outside the USA. Hospitals do not want to bill the company directly. If the companies are located outside the country then they would be even more reluctant. If you do not want to deal with all these in times of emergency, make sure everything is in place at the very beginning.

Enquire About PPO Network

Most visitor’s insurance plans are in a PPO network. Both the First Health PPO Network or The UnitedHealthcare Global Network has a number of doctors, hospitals, and urgent care and medical facilities listed under them. If the insurance comes under one of the PPO networks, the company can be billed directly, and you can also get the Network Negotiated Fees for expenses that are eligible for the plan. However, it is best to check with the medical facilities close to you if they cater to that particular network. Ask them if they accept that particular insurance and also how they would bill you. Once all your queries are met, take the decision to buy the insurance.

It is essential to be very clear about your own needs first because only then can you address the issues, if any, with the insurance company. Some basic things need to be checked as well; for example, the license of your agent, if buying through one. Don’t forget to ask about their prior experience. Avoid people or companies who seem like they might be fraudulent. Ask if the amount if refundable in case your visitor didn’t arrive at all. All these logistics will help you zero in one provider.
