Health Insurance In The United States – Why Is It Necessary?

Regardless of their location, healthy people often believe that they do not need health insurance. People have a common misconception that they don’t need health insurance just because they are fine health and, therefore, do not need to spend $100 or $300 on health insurance premiums.

American citizens do not have the option of ignoring health insurance; just like in other parts of the world, they cannot plan an accident or an illness. While health care costs in other countries are comparatively affordable, matters are entirely different in the United States. Here, people may be subjected to exorbitant charges.

“Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance.” —Nancy Pelosi

The necessity of health insurance in America

In America, those who do not have health insurance spend a huge amount of money when they need treatment of any kind. The costs can be anywhere between $500 and $50,000, and even more. This can leave people with many financial problems that can render them bankrupt.

The mere requirement of calling an ambulance in the event of an emergency can cost $300-$700. However, things are different for people who have health insurance because the insurance company bears the ambulance costs.

Similarly, the cost of treatment is also expensive and may be beyond the reach of the average individual. Although you will still be treated if you do not have a health insurance,  the hospital will have to take your Social Security number and other contact information to send an invoice for the treatment. Remember that the hospital will not take a casual attitude towards the collection. You will be pursued for the bills due and may have to deal with collection agencies.

Health insurance is not a luxury

Some people believe that health insurance is a luxury rather than a requirement. Unfortunately, this theory does not apply in America, where the costs of healthcare are extremely high. Hospitals and healthcare professionals are in the business for some money. If you are insured, you typically get better treatment compared to those who are not.

America authorities have also recognized this factor. As such, they have made it mandatory for every person to have a health insurance policy. If you do not follow the stipulations, you are penalized. There have been ongoing debates about how to bring the costs of healthcare down or to change the current health care system. However, if you are not insured, you’d better invest in health insurance—a sickness or an accident can happen at any time.

How to purchase a health insurance policy

Not all health insurance policies are similar. Therefore, you have to choose one that is appropriate for your requirements. You can choose to remain on the health insurance policy offered by your employer or even purchase an individual policy.  Purchasing a health insurance policy is not hard because insurance providers are competing with each other to get a bigger market share. In fact, you could be left spoiled for choices as insurance providers compete among themselves to offer better policies for their consumers.

When purchasing health insurance policies, conduct proper research and only to deal with a reputable insurance company. Make it a point to read the entire policy and the terms and conditions before making a commitment for the purchase. You must also make plenty of inquiries because you could easily be scammed into buying something that will not be suitable.

If you are concerned about the need for health insurance, you should understand that it is a necessity that cannot be ignored.
