How Can One Overcome Drug and Alcohol Addiction?

Two dangerous types of addiction are an addiction to drugs and alcohol addiction. They not only destroy the body, mind, and soul but also break relationships with friends and family. Furthermore, the society treats people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol like normal people. However, all is not lost; one can still overcome this downfall in life. In this post, we disclose tips on how to defeat drug and alcohol addiction.

“What fascinates me about addiction and obsessive behavior is that people would choose an altered state of consciousness that’s toxic and ostensibly destroys most aspects of your normal life because for a brie, moment, you feel okay.”  — Moby

Determine your addiction’s Trigger Factors

People don’t just become addicts—most people fall into this trap while trying to escape from something, what is called a  trigger factor. These trigger factors are what drive people into drugs or alcohol. List what triggers you to go for that puff or drink.

Once you know your trigger factors, come up wit an action plan to counter your alcohol and drug indulgence. This is what you should do whenever you have the urge for the drug or alcohol. For example, if you are stressed, take your dog for a walk instead of drinking beer. This will serve as your diversion tactic instead of going down the perilous path of addiction.

Avoid Temptations from Peers

Your external environment should be conducive to enable you to walk toward recovery. One way of creating such an environment is by avoiding people who are into drugs or alcohol. If you have such friends, cut ties with them immediately. No matter how much self-control you have, you are likely to relapse if you face constant temptation. Remember that the temptation is at its peak when you are with friends and peers who are into addiction. Look for good friends instead, people to help and support you through your rehab process.

Find a Support Group

Besides your self-support and support from your family and friends, extend your circle and find a support group in your area. Your friends and family may support you, but they may not have experienced addiction first hand. As such, probably the best they can do is sympathize with you. What you need instead if empathy and sympathy is to walk together with people who are undergoing the same issues as you.

Having been addicts themselves, the members of your support group understand your struggle. You can share all your doubts and sentiments together without judging one another. You will also support and inspire each other whenever there is a temptation to relapse.

Seek Professional Help

You need professional help if you cannot give up the addiction.  Counselors and doctors are well-equipped with the skills to do what they do. You will have to undergo some therapy sessions to cure your addiction. The professionals will also help you deal with withdrawal symptoms. Furthermore, they are there to listen to you without passing any judgment. It is their duty to help you overcome your problems in life and help you get back on track. Believe us when we say that you won’t regret seeking their help.
